Fresh on the scene, Cooper brings a fiery spirit and a massive voice to the turntable. Here marks her debut single release which includes two songs from her forthcoming self-titled album which draws from her love of old Soul and Motown records and her 60's and 70's Rock n Roll influences. She has written a fervid kaleidoscope of colorful songs with a dramatic and passionate flair.
It has been a year and a half since Cooper packed up her VW van in Portland OR and made the quest to Nashville TN. The flame haired songstress had paid dues in Portland playing in several bands, acting in local productions, and bartending at a seedy rock n roll strip club. It was time to take a shot at her lifelong dream of recording her songs and forming a road band in Music City. After months of knocking on doors, typical hard luck, and sleeping on an air mattress in a 60's hotel room-turned studio apartment, Cooper was able to make some headway. She began working with Nashville producer David Norris, and writing the record she had always wanted to make. She assembled a twelve piece soul band in both Nashville and Portland and began rehearsing both. Cooper played her first gig in Nashville opening for the Queen of Rock and Roll herself: Wanda Jackson, at a birthday bash held for fashion icon Manuel. Her music caught the ear of music industry notables and she recorded her full length album at one of Nashville's top recording studios: The Tracking Room.
The release of her 7-inch single is a tantalizing taste of what her full record will bring later this year. Cooper is a bright new talent that draws from the past and paints the future with a fresh and unique style.
''Tell Me To Stay''
A sexy and retro ultimatum, ''Tell Me To Stay'' sinks to the gut of the listener. Cooper's rare gift for bleeding the line between vocal power and vulnerability is apparent here. The song is a big and passionate ballad dressed with a deep horn section, rich layers of harmony, and an invigorating B3 Organ. Cooper's voluptuous stylings ring with passion and intensity, then melt with the sensual begging of a woman who has been pushed to the limit.
''Black Widow Lady''
''Black Widow Lady'' is a smokey yet buoyant concoction with a hypnotic twist of surf. Thick with Stax era horns and velvety Supremes style back-up vocals, it draws the listener back to a more soulful time. The song bounces with a burlesque sashay and torches with Cooper's rich and unique vocal tone, sending a playful yet seductive warning to those who dare get too close to a lady that may be a touch shady.
